How (and why) cargo trousers have made their way back into men's wardrobes

Once a military and workwear staple, now a practical classic – cargo trousers are firmly back at the centre of men’s fashion this autumn. Modern collections are increasingly focused on clothes that work for the wearer – functional, comfortable, and stylish – and cargo trousers are the perfect example of that balance.

Unlike before, when they were purely utilitarian, today’s cargos come with a different silhouette. Gone are the tighter cuts; instead, the new models lean towards a looser, more relaxed fit that feels laid-back yet adapts easily to different looks – from knitwear and trainers to shirts and blazers. Fabrics are sturdy and textured, often in neutral shades such as olive, beige or charcoal, so cargos no longer look like a uniform but rather a considered style choice.

At the weekend, they’re casual; in the office, they can hold their own as part of a smart-casual look. The key is picking the right pair – and remembering one golden rule. Cargo trousers look best at full length. That’s when they keep their distinctive line and strike the right balance between function and style. Cropped versions lose that effect and end up looking like something else entirely.
