Denim vs. Cargo Shorts: What Side Are You On?

Back in 2016, The Washington Post pointed out a hilarious divide in American style: the Midwest loves denim shorts, while coastal regions, especially Florida and Oregon, are die-hard cargo shorts territory.

Almost a decade later, the debate still stands. Both have their fans, and both have evolved.

Denim shorts work best when they’re clean, straight-cut, and hit just above the knee. Pair them with a white tee and sneakers for an easy win, or dress them up with a sweater vest and loafers. Keep the frays and extreme distressing to a minimum unless you’re chasing full throwback vibes.

Cargo shorts lean more relaxed and utilitarian. They’re great with a T-shirt or knit polo, and newer styles come in fun colors - just don’t go wild with the rest of the outfit. Think muted tones up top, clean kicks, and let the shorts do the talking.
